Rotational Speed Measurement in Hydroelectric Power & Flow Control via Governors

In hydroelectric power generation, if power transmission is abruptly cut off, the water turbine or generator may experience uncontrolled overspeed spinning, potentially damaging the rotating components or mechanical seals.
To prevent this, it is essential to perform rapid valve closure or similar control operations in the waterway immediately after power disconnection.

Overview

A gear speed sensor detects the rotation of components like water turbines and outputs a frequency pulse signal corresponding to the rotational speed.
This signal is transmitted to the governor through a signal converter to control the opening and closing of the waterway valves.

Measurement Benefits

Gear Speed Sensors

■ Capable of detecting speeds from 0 Hz, allowing precise tracking and logging of turbine motion right from startup through complete standstill.

■ The sensor's detection face features a fully sealed, unified metal housing for exceptionally high structural reliability.

■ The cable outlet incorporates our proprietary Conical Press™ technology, making it well-suited for harsh environments exposed to water or oil splashing.

Signal Converters

■ Powered by our proprietary Periomatic™ calculation method, delivering outstanding accuracy from ultra-low to high speeds. It ensures ultra-fast response times to sudden turbine speed fluctuations.

■ Analog output ranges can be selected from 0–10 V, 0(1)–5 V, 4–20 mA, etc. (configurable via internal software program or specified at the time of order).
The full-scale value can also be finely tuned to match your governor's input requirements.

■ Alarm output is available as an option on the SPD series. It triggers an alert signal immediately if the turbine exceeds the designated RPM limits.
